Tour of Red Square
Hundreds of years ago there was a square in front of the Kremlin wall. It was called "Torg"(market place ). In the 16th century, it was called Trinity - according to the church of St. Trinity, which stood on the site of St. Basil's Cathedral.
In the Middle Ages, fires often flared here, so the square had another name - “Fire”. Just in the 1661 - 1662 the square for the first time was called "Red", which meant beautiful.It has always been the main square of Moscow.
The compositional center of Red Square is the mausoleum of V.I. Lenin, behind - the Kremlin wall, on the contrary - GUM (Upper Trading Rows). The decoration of the square is the Cathedral of the Intercession on the Moat, built in the middle of the 16th century by decree of Ivan the Terrible, better known as St. Basil's Cathedral. It was here, that the magnificent cathedrals were built, dedicated to the mother of God, Protector of Moscow and All Russia.
Kazan Cathedral and the chapel of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God at the Resurrection Gate, the Church of the Intercession on the Moat, Near St. Basil's Cathedral, there is a monument to Minin and Pozharsky, the leaders of the national liberation struggle in the early 17th century. To the left of St. Basil's Cathedral there is a place of execution, from which the royal decrees were announced and the sovereign himself sometimes addressed the people of Moscow.
In front of the building of the Historical Museum there is a monument to Marshal G.K. Zhukov by sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov. It was opened in May 1995 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. Duration of the excursion in Red Square - 1 hour.
