Tour of St. Basil's Cathedral
The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Mother of God at the Moat ( St. Basil Cathedral) is located on the Red Square of China Town in Moscow. The temple was built in the middle of the XVI century by decree of Ivan the Terrible in honor of the capture of the Kazan Khanate - part of the former Golden Horde. The decisive victory was won on the festival of the Protection of the Mother of God. In ancient times, a moat passed along the Kremlin wall. Therefore, the cathedral received such a name.
Originally, here, on a hill, next to a moat, there was a white stone church in the name of the Trinity, where the God's fool Basil the Blessed was buried. When the Cathedral of the Intercession was built,St.Basil's tomb turned up near its wall. From the tomb miracles began to emanate, and the cathedral received a second name - St. Basil's Cathedral. It is called the fantastic flower of Red Square, an icon imprinted in a stone. The inner and outer galleries unite the chapels of the cathedral in a single ensemble and create the impression of a city of churches. The duration of the excursion to the Intercesson Cathedral (St. Basil's Cathedral) - 1 hour. Looking around the temple, you will get acquainted with the interior, which are 10 small churches connected by narrow passages.
